David Awschalom selected as a 2017 Highly Cited Researcher by Clarivate Analytics

Clarivate Analytics — formerly the Intellectual Property & Science business of Thomson Reuters — recently named David Awschalom, the Liew Family Professor in Molecular Engineering and Deputy Director for Space, Infrastructure, and Facilities, as a 2017 Highly Cited Researcher. This marks the third time that Awschalom has been chosen for this honor, as he was previously selected as a 2015 and 2016 Highly Cited Researcher. Representing some of the "world's most influential scientific minds," Awschalom is one of approximately 3,000 researchers who received this notable and prestigious distinction, representing the top 1 percent of the most cited for their subject field and year of publication.

To be named as a Clarivate Analytics Highly Cited Researcher requires one to write the greatest number of reports officially designated by Essential Science Indicators as Highly Cited Papers, defined as those that rank in the top 1 percent by citations for field and publication year in the Web of Science — this designation is truly an indication of exceptional impact in the research field. The 2017 list focuses on contemporary research achievement: only Highly Cited Papers in science and social sciences journals indexed in the Web of Science Core Collection during the 11-year period 2005-2015 were surveyed. The final new list contains about 3,400 Highly Cited Researchers in 21 fields of the sciences and social sciences.

Awschalom is one of the world’s leading research scientists in spintronics and quantum information engineering. His research in spintronics involves understanding and controlling the spin of electrons for advanced computing, medical imaging, encryption, and other technologies.
