Stephanie Bi chosen as PME's inaugural Science Writing Fellow

Stephanie Bi has been selected as the first Science Writing Fellow for the Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering (PME). As the Pritzker Molecular Engineering's Science Writing Fellow, she is responsible for writing news articles on topics such as faculty members' notable research and publications, new faculty appointments, and major PME events. She was also selected as one of the winners of the 2015 John Crerar Foundation Science Writing Prize for College Students.

Being able to clearly communicate in today's world is an extremely important skill; however in the world of science and engineering, where technical jargon can overwhelm those who may not be familiar with these specialized terms, communication becomes even more significant. When researchers make fundamental discoveries or come up with innovative solutions for some of society's toughest problems, it is imperative that the public understands not only the general scope of the cutting-edge research being done, but also of the major implications for society that the research brings. The PME is committed to making science and engineering accessible for all individuals, and has created the PME Science Writing Fellowship to encourage students to learn this valuable skill.

Stephanie commented, "I am thrilled and grateful to be the PME's first Science Writing Fellow. This is an outstanding opportunity as it marries my interests in the sciences and humanities and allows me to explore journalistic writing in a manner I am not heretofore very familiar with. Broadly, I am excited by the notion of translating jargon (be it scientific, medical, legal, or otherwise) for the lay audience in an accessible and invigorating way."
